Honinbo Shuusaku (本因坊 秀策, Hon′inbō Shūsaku), born as Torajirō Kuwabara (桑原 虎次郎, Kuwabara Torajirō) is a former Go player once inhabited by the spirit of Fujiwara-no-Sai.

In Episode 49 of the anime, Honinbō Shūsaku is described as "a good person". Fujiwara-no-Sai said that "when there was an epidemic, and the people around began to get sick, he watched over them at the risk of getting sick himself." He is also described as a "clever" and a "truly kind person." Apparently, Honinbō Shūsaku allowed Fujiwara-no-Sai to play all his games of Go.

- Honinbo is historical character, who was born on June 6, 1829 and died August 10, 1862 (aged 33), by many considered the greatest Go player in the mid-19th century, similarly to how he was introduced in Hikaru no Go.[1]
