Kaoru Kishimoto (岸本 薫 Kishimoto Kaoru) is the Kaio Middle School Go club president and former Insei who did not become a professional and quit.

Appearance[]

He is distinguished by his glasses and his penchant for black coffee.

Personality[]

He is very calm and confident. He respects strong players such as Akira.

History[]

He was a former insei who quit after being unable to move past the B league.

Plot[]

Middle School Tournament Arc[]

Kishimoto is the Kaio Middle School Go club president. He played Akira Toya in a game to compete for the 1st board position for the upcoming middle school tournament. He had to resign early and admitted he was outclassed and right not to pursue professional play. Despite this, Akira begs for the 3rd position so Kishimoto plays 1st board.

When the day of the tournament arrives, Yuki decides to start his own rivalry up with Kishimoto. Mitani compensates for their difference in skill by playing fast aggressive moves to throw him off balance. Kishimoto sees through this and fights back, winning the game.

Insei Arc[]

Later he plays a match against Hikaru Shindo to gauge his strength, and defeats him easily. His dismissive attitude to Hikaru's plan to rise to Akira's level while playing in the school club spurs Hikaru on to register as an Insei.

His liking for black coffee allows Hikaru to realize that he is the failed Insei that the others are discussing shortly after Hikaru becomes an Insei.

Go[]

Kishimoto is a strong insei level player. His playing style overemphasizes control of the center, so he is outclassed by pro level players like Akira and the A league insei. Despite this he easily outclasses strong amateurs such as Mitani and Hikaru.

Relationships[]

Akira Toya[]

He has great respect for his fellow club member, and acknowledges that Akira is stronger.

Hikaru Shindo[]

He is dismissive of Hikaru's Go, as without Sai's help he hardly qualifies as Toya's rival.
