Kosuke Ochi (越智 康介, Ochi Kōsuke) is a 2 Dan Go Player who was firstly an Insei in Class 1. He later passes the Pro Exam and he becomes a Pro along with Hikaru Shindo and Yoshitaka Waya.

Appearance[]

Ochi anime
In the anime

Ochi had orange hair light (brown in the manga)

Personality[]

Ochi always believes he's superior, and more often than not, he's proven right. He's not one to hold back his thoughts, even if it means belittling others. Despite his arrogance, Ochi is surprisingly sensitive. When he's defeated in a game of Go, he retreats to the bathroom to cry and analyze his loss.

His confidence is matched only by his pride, as evidenced by his decision to challenge Yashiro to a match, even though he was already qualified for the tournament. He wanted to prove his worthiness for the Hokuto Cup. While it's clear that Ochi's self-assurance borders on arrogance, but his dedication to Go is unwavering.

History[]

Little is known about Ochi's early life, but much like everyone else, he started playing when he was younger, though one could say he is nearly a prodigy.

Ochi became an Insei three month before Hikaru and was the top of his class.

Plot[]

Insei Arc[]

Ochi first appears when Hikaru and Waya talk about Akira. He responds that Akira does not even matter as he marks his win. Waya noted that Ochi is going to take the Pro Exam this year and was the top of his class.

In the Young Lion's Tournament, Ochi, Isumi, and Adachi are the only insei to win their matches against the pros, and Ochi is the only one to advance to the 3rd round.

Pro Exam Arc[]

Ochi intends to pass the pro exam without a single loss. He views Isumi, Waya, Honda, Adachi, and Komiya as his main obstacles, being initially dismissive of Hikaru. Akira agrees to give private lessons to Ochi in an attempt to learn how strong a level Hikaru is playing at. However, Ochi figures this out and refuses to be taught by the likes of him.

Ochi deduces that Isumi made a fatal mistake in his match against Hikaru and fell to pieces. However, Isumi manages to pull off a win against Ochi, giving him his 1st loss. After Hikaru loses to Honda, Honda helps him realize that Hikaru is getting stronger by the day. Ochi later asks Akira for help to defeat him, and is amazed by the replay of his match with Suyong.

As the pro exam nears its end, Hikaru, Ochi, Waya, Isumi, and Honda emerge as the forerunners. Akira reveals to Ochi the first match played against Hikaru (Sai) two years ago, and he is confused by the contrasting matches. After 25 days, Ochi officially passes the exam with only one loss thus far. Akira urges him to win his match against Hikaru.

On the final day, Hikaru faces off against Ochi, who has initiated a technique influenced by Akira. Hikaru uses a similar tactic with his game against Suyong, but Ochi sees right through this and manages to block Hikaru with a deft move. After a long and intense game, Hikaru narrowly wins, devastating Ochi even though he had the best score in the pro exams. He, Waya, and Hikaru all become pros.

Sai vs Meijin Arc[]

Ochi spectates Hikaru's Shinshodan game and is appalled by his (Sai's) exceedingly aggressive and reckless style.

Return Arc[]

Ochi is dismissive of Hikaru when he starts skipping games.

Hokuto Cup Arc[]

In the qualifying tournament to determine Japan's players for the Hokuto Cup, Ochi wins along with Hikaru. However, everyone ignores him and focuses on how strong Yashiro (who lost) is. Ochi chooses to challenge Yashiro to a match despite already qualifying for the tournament, as he wanted to determine who truly has the right to participate in the Hokuto Cup. Ochi loses.

Ochi and Hikaru's other pro friends spectate the Hokuto Cup.

Go[]

Ochi is an above average player of go, nearly on prodigy levels, though not on the same plane as Akira Toya.

He is fast and extremely strong for his age. One reason why he is so great is that he has confidence in his moves, which sometimes puts down other players. He can read complex moves and even make some himself, often overwhelming his comrades and other players who are older than he in the same rank.

Relationships[]

Unsurprisingly, most people tend to get rubbed the wrong way by Ochi's way of manner, but few hate him entirely.

Hikaru Shindo[]

Though quite a bit stronger at first, Ochi has seen the potential and strength of Hikaru and after being beaten once in a close game, Ochi considers Hikaru a great player, but also a rival.

Akira Toya[]

Being beaten by Akira time and time again while training, Ochi want's nothing else than to be considered a rival from Toya himself. Ochi understands that Akira is in a league of his own, but thinks that eventually he too will be able to beat Akira. However he became irritated about Akira's obsession over Hikaru, thinking Akira was overrating Hikaru and believing he could beat him without Akira help.

Yoshitaka Waya[]

Though he has never been beaten by Waya, Ochi can see that Waya is strong in his own right, and would be a fool to think that Waya never has a chance of becoming strong enough to take him down.

Never really considered friends, Ochi and Waya have spent time with each other while watching games, or waiting in the lobby. Though Waya is normally annoyed by Ochi, Waya has yet to actually say he hated him. This is probably due to being slightly respected for being so young yet such a great player.

Shinichiro Isumi[]

Touched on a few times, Ochi and Isumi are very close in strength for the most part until Ochi progressed to pro and was able to train with better players.

Although never really been said, there seems to be a mutual respect for each other due to both having the same strength, and both being two of the top players in the Insei class.
